Itteringham Mill was built in 1778, was abandoned in the 1920s and restored as a private home in 1938. CCL’s work involved the refurbishment, updating and significant contemporary extension of this very traditional building.
The original structure comprises masonry walls and timber framing, together with many unusual and unique features. As with many watermills, the ancient course of the river was altered in order to provide a better head of water for the mill. This involved the digging of a wide new cut some 250 yards long with a high bank on the northern side where the river was to be several feet higher than the surrounding terrain.
We had to address complications arising from the millrace and adjacent River Bure, which the Mill uses to provide its electrical energy via a micro-hydro turbine and water source heat pump, as well as solar water panels on the side walls of the Mill. The positioning of the millrace and the presence of running water added to the complexity of the refurbishment process.
The project involved the complete replacement of the rear elevation with a glazed contemporary façade, together with an oversailing balcony to make the most of the wonderful views over the River Bure.
To achieve this, we designed, detailed and supervised a complex steel ‘picture frame’ arrangement together with a number of carefully positioned piles in order to support the internal alterations along with the cantilevered balcony.
Since the work was carried out Itteringham Mill has received national recognition as a traditional structure which displays a high level of contemporary design.
